Representatives of unions, federations, associations and civil society organisations working on the promotion of labour rights in Cambodia have joined together in a campaign to demand seniority pay. The campaign, being held under the slogan “Say No to Workers’ Hunger”, also aims to push the Ministry of Labour to cancel its letter saying workers will lose their work benefits during the virus pandemic. The letter is said to help employers and business during the COVID-19 crisis.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday in front of nearly 200 workers and journalists in the capital, Khun Tharo, labour programme manager at the Center for Labor Alliances and Human Rights, said: “the government has reduced employee benefits via letter 295 by the Ministry of Labour released in June, which does not require employers to pay notice pay and retrenchment compensation to employees,”

He added the unions and other rights associations have submitted petitions to the ministry to demand a solution on seniority pay for workers. However, they have not received any responses from the ministry so far.
